Robin Slonina Wonder Woman Portraits
"Wonder Woman Portraits" by Robin Slonina

Las Vegas artist Robin Slonina is showing 15 brand new original paintings based on feminist icon Wonder Woman, as part of the current “Gender Bias” exhibit, now on display at local Arts District gallery Recycled Propaganda.

Gallery owner Izaac Zevalking states, “I wanted to assemble a collection of work that reflects on the history of gender oppression and resistance within popular culture. For this exhibit, I placed the established artist Robin Slonina alongside newcomer Kristy Lee. Both of their work pulls inspiration from comic text and graphics, and I thought they would play well off each other.” Also on exhibit is Izaac’s own work: politically-charged designs created under the pseudonym Recycled Propaganda. Even if you don’t know his name, you have probably seen his work on indoor and outdoor murals and stickers all over town.

When asked why Slonina chose the Marvel comic character as her inspiration, the artist stated, “When I was a kid, Wonder Woman was pretty much the only female superhero in popular culture. My sisters and I would argue about who got to twirl in the backyard pretending to be our “girl power” icon – especially because the other two were then stuck playing Superman or Aquaman! As I grew older, she became a contemporary symbol for women doing it all: we juggle families, housework, school, careers, charities and community building. And many contemporary men do it all now too! It’s become obvious to me that we are ALL Wonder Women. She is also a symbol of justice and unity. I think a lot of Americans are pretty sick of the divisions that have escalated in the past several years, and social media and certain press outlets are dividing us further. I believe Americans have more in common than we think. Obviously, we are all passionate about our country. We all love our kids and want to give the next generation a better world. I hope my artwork can inspire people to think about uniting again. In the meantime, I hope it gives anyone who views it a little joy and hope in these crazy times.”

The show had a soft opening on November 14, with the official opening scheduled for the Art’s District First Friday celebration on December 4, 2020. For the grand opening, Slonina plans to create multiple new original mini paintings on sale for only $20 each, “so everyone can take home something ‘Wonder-ful’,” she jokes. The exhibit will stay up through January 30.
